Greenwood Area Chamber of Commerce

Carolinas Minority Supplier Development Council - The first Minority Purchasing Council in the Carolinas was formed August 23, 1973 at a luncheon given by Burlington Industries, in Greensboro.  The group decided to form the Triad Regional Council which included Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina as its membership base.  Much of the credit for its formation belongs to Bob Brown of High Point, who worked in the Nixon Administration.

In 1977, the Triad Regional Minority Purchasing Council was incorporated in the State of North Carolina as a nonprofit organization and later changed to include Metrolina and the Piedmont Chapters.  Two persons were hired out of a central office in Greensboro.

During the following years (1978-79), Charleston and Columbia were added.  The organization changed its name to the Carolinas Minority Supplier Development Councils, Inc. and in late 1981 relocated to Charlotte.

Today the CAROLINASMSDC services both North and South Carolina through five (5) chapters - Foothills, Metrolina, Midlands, Piedmont, and Triad).  Council programs and services are administered from the regional headquarters office, which is still located in Charlotte and through the local Chapter councils.  The CAROLINASMSDC office is staffed full-time and supervised by an Executive Director.

CAROLINASMSDC's current membership includes over 250 corporate members and agencies, and approximately 400 certified vendors.  Over the years the CAROLINASMSDC has made numerous strides in the development of minority businesses and is looked upon as one of the most progressive business organizations in the country.  The CAROLINASMSDC was named National Council of the Year in 1991 and 1992.
